Meter

What is a meter?

The meter is the SI base unit of length. Since 2019, the meter has been defined by fixing the numerical value of the speed of light in vacuum to exactly 299,792,458 meters per second. Every other SI length unit derives from the meter.

Origin of the meter

The meter was originally defined in 1793 by the French Academy of Sciences as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a meridian through Paris. It has been redefined multiple times — by physical prototype, then by atomic transitions, and finally in 2019 by fundamental physical constants.

Where it is used

The meter is the international standard for length in science, engineering, construction, athletics, and everyday measurement in metric countries. It underpins definitions of area (m²), volume (m³), and most derived SI units.

When and where it was developed

Established 1793 in France; ratified internationally via the Metre Convention 1875; redefined in 1960, 1983, and most recently 2019 when the SI redefinition fixed it to the speed of light.

Petameter

What is a petameter?

A petameter is a metric unit of length equal to one quadrillion meters (1×10¹⁵ m). It is rarely used in everyday or scientific contexts; astronomers prefer the light-year or parsec for these scales.

Origin of the petameter

The petameter uses the SI prefix peta- (from Greek penta, five, by analogy with the exponent's relation to thousand-cubed-cubed), adopted by the CGPM in 1975 to denote 10¹⁵.

Where it is used

Petameters could express interstellar-scale distances but are almost never used in practice. A light-year is approximately 9.46 Pm; astronomy uses light-years and parsecs as standard.

When and where it was developed

SI prefix peta- adopted in 1975; the petameter is rarely used because astronomy has well-established non-SI units (light-year, parsec) for this scale.

Meter to Petameter conversion formula

The relationship between meters and petameters:

1 m = 1e-15 Pm
1 Pm = 1e+15 m

To convert meters to petameters, multiply the value in meters by 1e-15. To reverse, multiply petameters by 1e+15.

How to use this converter

Type a value into the calculator. The result in petameters updates as you type. Tap a quick value, copy the result with one click, or use the swap arrow to jump straight to the Petameter to Meter converter for the reverse direction.

Step-by-step: convert meters to petameters

  1. Write down the value in meters (m).
  2. Multiply that value by the factor 1e-15.
  3. The product is the equivalent value in petameters (Pm).
  4. To reverse, multiply the petameter value by 1e+15.

Worked examples

Example 1 — Convert 1 m to Pm:
1 × 1e-15 = 1e-15 Pm

Example 2 — Convert 100 m to Pm:
100 × 1e-15 = 1e-13 Pm

Real-world example — Maritime depth conversion

A 10-meter sounding depth converts cleanly into petameters. Recreational divers and sailors translate between the two units whenever they read legacy charts against modern depth-sounder displays.

10 m × 1e-15 = 1e-14 Pm

Real-world example — Reference scenario in case of fallback

Conversion between human-scale length units is the everyday workflow of architecture, athletics, and apparel design — three of the most common contexts that span metric and imperial systems.

1 m × 1e-15 = 1e-15 Pm

Real-world example — Adult height conversion

A 1.8-meter-tall person measures a value in petameters that converts the height to the unit favoured by American forms, schools, or driver's licences. This is daily routine for anyone living between metric and imperial systems.

1.8 m × 1e-15 = 1.8e-15 Pm
