Micron

What is a micron?

A micron is a deprecated synonym for the micrometer (1×10⁻⁶ m). Although officially obsolete since 1967, the term remains in widespread informal use in microscopy, biology, materials science, and industrial filtration.

Origin of the micron

The term micron was coined in 1879 by the BIPM as a unit name for one millionth of a meter. It was officially deprecated in 1967 in favor of the SI-compliant name micrometer to avoid confusion with the device (also called a micrometer) used for precise mechanical measurement.

Where it is used

Microns are used informally in filtration ratings (e.g., a 5-micron water filter), industrial coatings, microscopy specifications, and pharmaceutical particle-size descriptions. The conversion to micrometers is exact: 1 micron = 1 µm = 1×10⁻⁶ m.

When and where it was developed

Introduced in 1879, deprecated by the BIPM in 1967, but retained in informal industrial and scientific usage well into the 21st century.

Meter

What is a meter?

The meter is the SI base unit of length. Since 2019, the meter has been defined by fixing the numerical value of the speed of light in vacuum to exactly 299,792,458 meters per second. Every other SI length unit derives from the meter.

Origin of the meter

The meter was originally defined in 1793 by the French Academy of Sciences as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a meridian through Paris. It has been redefined multiple times — by physical prototype, then by atomic transitions, and finally in 2019 by fundamental physical constants.

Where it is used

The meter is the international standard for length in science, engineering, construction, athletics, and everyday measurement in metric countries. It underpins definitions of area (m²), volume (m³), and most derived SI units.

When and where it was developed

Established 1793 in France; ratified internationally via the Metre Convention 1875; redefined in 1960, 1983, and most recently 2019 when the SI redefinition fixed it to the speed of light.

Micron to Meter conversion formula

The relationship between microns and meters:

1 micron = 1e-6 m
1 m = 1000000 micron

To convert microns to meters, multiply the value in microns by 1e-6. To reverse, multiply meters by 1000000.

How to use this converter

Type a value into the calculator. The result in meters updates as you type. Tap a quick value, copy the result with one click, or use the swap arrow to jump straight to the Meter to Micron converter for the reverse direction.

Step-by-step: convert microns to meters

  1. Write down the value in microns (micron).
  2. Multiply that value by the factor 1e-6.
  3. The product is the equivalent value in meters (m).
  4. To reverse, multiply the meter value by 1000000.

Worked examples

Example 1 — Convert 1 micron to m:
1 × 1e-6 = 1e-6 m

Example 2 — Convert 100 micron to m:
100 × 1e-6 = 1e-4 m

Real-world example — Quarter-meter measurement reference

A 250,000-micron length equals 0.25 meters — useful for comparing supply-chain spec sheets where some lengths are quoted in the smaller unit and some in the larger.

250000 micron × 1e-6 = 0.25 m

Real-world example — From microscopic to macroscopic

A million microns equals exactly one meter. This kind of conversion appears in microfluidics, where total channel length is given in meters but feature widths are in microns.

1000000 micron × 1e-6 = 1 m

Real-world example — Macro-scale buildup

A million microns equals exactly one meter — the conversion that bridges microscale features and macroscale objects in microfluidic, biomedical, and semiconductor packaging design.

1000000 micron × 1e-6 = 1 m
