Kelvin

What is a kelvin?

The kelvin (K) is the SI base unit of thermodynamic temperature, defined by fixing the Boltzmann constant k at exactly 1.380649×10⁻²³ J/K. Zero kelvin is absolute zero, the lowest temperature physically possible, and kelvin values are written without a degree sign.

Origin of the kelvin

Named for William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin, who in 1848 calculated the value of absolute zero (about −273 °C) and proposed an absolute thermodynamic scale. His title comes from the River Kelvin, which flows past the University of Glasgow in Scotland.

Where it is used

The universal temperature unit of science and engineering — physics, chemistry, astronomy, and materials science — and the standard for color temperature in photography, displays, and lighting (a 5600 K daylight bulb).

When and where it was developed

Proposed by William Thomson (Lord Kelvin) in 1848; adopted as an SI base unit by the 10th CGPM in 1954 and redefined through the fixed Boltzmann constant by the 26th CGPM, effective May 20, 2019.

Megakelvin

What is a megakelvin?

One megakelvin (MK) is one million kelvins (10⁶ K).

Origin of the megakelvin

Formed with the SI prefix 'mega-' (from Greek 'megas', great) applied to the kelvin base unit.

Where it is used

Astrophysics and fusion science — the Sun's core burns at about 15.7 MK, and the solar corona runs at 1–3 MK.

When and where it was developed

The mega- prefix dates to the 1873 British Association system and entered the SI in 1960.

Kelvin to Megakelvin conversion formula

The exact relationship between kelvins and megakelvins:

MK = K × 1e-6
K = MK × 1000000

To convert kelvins to megakelvins, multiply the value in kelvins by 1e-6. To reverse, multiply the value in megakelvins by 1000000.

Both units count upward from absolute zero, so 0 K = 0 MK and the relationship is a pure ratio.

How to use this converter

Type a value into the calculator. The result in megakelvins updates as you type. Tap a quick value, copy the result with one click, or use the swap arrow to jump straight to the Megakelvin to Kelvin converter for the reverse direction.

Step-by-step: convert kelvins to megakelvins

  1. Write down the temperature in kelvins (K).
  2. Multiply the value in kelvins by 1e-6.
  3. The result is the same temperature expressed in megakelvins (MK).
  4. To reverse, multiply the value in megakelvins by 1000000 — or open the Megakelvin to Kelvin converter.

Worked examples

Example 1 — Convert 310.15 K to MK (human body temperature):
310.15 × 1e-6 = 0.00031015 MK

Example 2 — Convert 373.15 K to MK (the boiling point of water):
373.15 × 1e-6 = 0.00037315 MK

Frequently asked questions

How many megakelvins is 1 kelvin?
1 kelvin equals 1e-6 megakelvins.
How do I convert kelvins to megakelvins?
Use the formula MK = K × 1e-6: multiply the value in kelvins by 1e-6.
How do I convert megakelvins back to kelvins?
Apply the reverse formula K = MK × 1000000 — multiply the value in megakelvins by 1000000 — or use the Megakelvin to Kelvin converter.
How many megakelvins is 373.15 kelvins?
373.15 kelvins equals 0.00037315 megakelvins, because 373.15 × 1e-6 = 0.00037315.
Can a temperature be below absolute zero?
No. Absolute zero (0 K = −273.15 °C = −459.67 °F) is the floor of the thermodynamic temperature scale. The calculator flags any input that would fall below it.
