Rod

What is a rod?

A rod is an Imperial unit of length equal to 16.5 feet (about 5.03 m). It is also called a perch or pole. Used historically in English and American land surveying.

Origin of the rod

The rod derives from medieval English land-surveying practice. Standardised at 16.5 feet (= 25 links of a surveyor's chain = 1/4 chain) by Edmund Gunter in 1620.

Where it is used

Rods are the standard unit in legacy US public-land-survey records, where lot dimensions are typically expressed in rods and chains. Modern surveyors generally use feet or meters but legacy deeds remain in rods.

When and where it was developed

Defined by Edmund Gunter in 1620 as 16.5 feet via the chain-based survey system; became exact via the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement.

Caliber

What is a caliber?

In length-measurement context, a caliber is a unit equal to one hundredth of an inch (2.54×10⁻⁴ m). The same word also refers to a firearm's bore diameter; in that context the value depends on the specific cartridge.

Origin of the caliber

The caliber as a length unit derives from the inch by hundredth subdivision. Standardised through the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement.

Where it is used

Calibers appear in ballistics literature (alongside the more common usage as bore diameter), historical small-arms specifications, and a few precision-engineering contexts. Often confused with the cartridge-naming caliber, which is a different concept.

When and where it was developed

Length-unit usage standardised through the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement; the bore-diameter usage long predates this.

Rod to Caliber conversion formula

The relationship between rods and calibers:

1 rd = 19800 cl
1 cl = 5.050505e-5 rd

To convert rods to calibers, multiply the value in rods by 19800. To reverse, multiply calibers by 5.050505e-5.

How to use this converter

Type a value into the calculator. The result in calibers updates as you type. Tap a quick value, copy the result with one click, or use the swap arrow to jump straight to the Caliber to Rod converter for the reverse direction.

Step-by-step: convert rods to calibers

  1. Write down the value in rods (rd).
  2. Multiply that value by the factor 19800.
  3. The product is the equivalent value in calibers (cl).
  4. To reverse, multiply the caliber value by 5.050505e-5.

Worked examples

Example 1 — Convert 1 rd to cl:
1 × 19800 = 19800 cl

Example 2 — Convert 100 rd to cl:
100 × 19800 = 1980000 cl

Real-world example — Sub-meter precision

A 0.001-rod (1 mm) tolerance equals 1,000 calibers — useful for surface-finish specs, where macro-scale dimensions are given in the larger unit but feature roughness in the smaller.

0.001 rd × 19800 = 19.8 cl

Real-world example — Macro-to-micro scale comparison

2 rods of measurement converts to a very large number in calibers — useful in materials science when comparing bulk-sample dimensions to feature-level surface specs.

2 rd × 19800 = 39600 cl

Real-world example — Macroscopic to microscopic

One rod equals a million calibers. Optical engineers calculating coherence length compare macro-scale path lengths with micro-scale wavelength differences using exactly this conversion.

1 rd × 19800 = 19800 cl
